Combined Cadet Force
Our Combined Cadet Force was established in 2021 as part of the Cadet Expansion Programme. The Gilberd School is the only school in north Essex with a Combined Cadet Force and one of only a handful of non-selective state schools able to offer this exceptional experience to its students. Our Contingent is sponsored by 13 Air Assault Support Regiment Royal Logistic Corps and we currently parade 140 cadets with 9 adult volunteers in uniform. The Contingent is organised into A Troop, B Troop and C Troop. As the unit grows, we will continue adding new cadets and Troops.
What is the CCF?
The CCF is a voluntary youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. There are approximately 500 contingents in secondary schools all over the UK, offering young people a broad range of challenging, exciting, adventurous and educational activities.
The aim of the CCF is, ‘to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. Each CCF is an educational partnership between the school and the Ministry of Defence, and a CCF may include Royal Navy/Royal Marines, Army or Royal Air Force sections’.
The CCF is does not actively recruit its members into the armed forces, however a significant proportion of the armed forces are former cadets whose positive experience in the cadets encouraged them to consider a military career.
Who can join?
Recruitment is open to students in Years 8 and above. To ensure the maximum benefit is gained, we focus recruitment in Year 8 though we also take students from older years. We also encourage students who are members of community ACF units to attend in a mentoring capacity.
