Welcomefrom the Headteacher
We are delighted to welcome you to The Gilberd School.
Founded in 1912 and celebrating 110 years in 2022, we are proud of our rich heritage. Beginning life as a selective boys’ technical school and later, a co-educational grammar school, we are now a highly performing and forward-looking, non-selective, co-educational academy. Our simple motto perfectly encapsulates the formula for our continuing success:

Alex Cottrell
Head Boy
Student leadership is an integral part of life at The Gilberd School. I began my journey in Year 7 attaining my Gilberd Way Awards before being appointed as a Junior Prefect in Year 8 and then serving as a Sports Captain in Year 10. In the role of Head Boy, I support the Head Girl to lead the Senior XLII group of prefects. We are essentially a shadow leadership team with a platform to share student feedback in weekly meetings with the Headteacher and Deputy Headteachers. This direct line of communication enables the school’s leadership team to make more informed decisions.

Head Girl
Working closely with the Head Boy, the Senior XLII and the senior leadership team, I have significant responsibility representing 1600 students in the school. Along with my senior prefects, we lead every assembly, present at Open Evenings and Awards Evenings and act as the public face of the student body; we regularly attend events outside of school. Like Alex, the Head Boy, I began my leadership career in Year 8 and have served as both a Junior Prefect and a House Captain.

Head Cadet
I am also a founding member of The Gilberd School Combined Cadet Force and have been in the contingent for nearly 4 years. The opportunities to learn new skills and develop leadership skills are the most important benefits of being a cadet. I have risen to the rank of Staff Sergeant and take pride leading and teaching younger Cadets parts of the CCF curriculum. I have also held a number of other leadership positions during my school career.

Head Cadet
I am one of the founding members of The Gilberd School Combined Cadet Force. The contingent began with just 2 troops but we have rapidly expanded to 4 troops and 140 cadets. Head Cadet is a school leadership position and it is my role to represent the cadet force at high profile school events. Since joining the CCF, I have attained the rank of Corporal and acquired a wide range of news skills from first aid to weapons handling.
